SKDT just couldn’t deliver on the same scale without its hard-working volunteers – including retired postal worker Willie Durnan.
Campbeltown man Willie has experience in voluntary roles throughout South Kintyre, and has been widely sought after for his stage lighting skills down the years.
He said of his start with SKDT: “The main thing that brought me here was having done lighting and stage lighting as a hobby.
“I had my own equipment in storage which I would set up for events and nights out, showcasing bands at concerts and festivals such as the Mull of Kintyre Music Festival (MOKFest).
“I worked for the Royal Mail in the town for 38 years and after retiring at 57, I was asked for help with a couple of events a few years back when my colleague Bobby Cairns started here, and I brought my own lights and equipment in.
“I was quite keen to get involved – you can only go walking up Bengullion or round Campbeltown Loch so many times!
“I have mainly worked on the events side for SKDT but more recently I have been learning other skills thanks to Bobby who is a proper tradesman, such as basic maintenance work.
“I have been involved in day-to-day work more than I thought, and enjoy it, particularly helping to set up events, such as we did in October for Hallowe’en in the town hall.
“You get a real buzz when something comes together and works well.
“People will speak to you about things going on that they like, and that’s a nice feeling, to be doing something good for the community.”
