Biodiesel

SKDT's Community Powerdown project is involved in the successful funding bid to the Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) for a pilot biodiesel scheme.

The funding will enable Kintyre Recycling to establish the viability of processing waste vegetable oil to run kerbside and bring site recycling vehicles. This will save 22 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year as well as supporting employment and training opportunities. This project will allow Kintyre Recycling to establish whether biodiesel can become a permanent feature in their operation.

The biodiesel will be produced from waste vegetable oil collected from local catering establishments. The biodiesel equipment will subject the waste oil to a filtering and transesterification process with biodiesel being the end product. The biodiesel will then be blended with ordinary diesel and used in the companies vehicles.

At present the biodiesel co-ordinator has been appointed and a site for the biodiesel plant is being prepared. The biodiesel equipment is due to be delivered and ready by early March 2010.

This page will keep track of the projects progress so keep visiting for updates.
