Energy Efficiency
As part of the Community Powerdown project, SKDT have decided to promote domestic energy efficiency.
WHY?
The electricity we use to power laptops, TV's, microwaves, etc. comes from the burning of fossil fuels in large power stations. Each kWh of electricity has a carbon cost of 0.43kg of carbon dioxide associated with it. Using gas for heating and cooking has a carbon cost of 0.19 kg, while oil stands at 0.24 kg per kWh and coal at 0.32kg per kWh. Using electricity, gas, coal and oil efficiently can help to reduce emissions from households and reduce your fuel bills!
HOW?
SKDT has purchased 6 electricity monitors that clip around the wires coming from the fuse box in your home and tells you exactly how much electricity is being used in real time. These monitors are available to borrow by any South Kintyre resident who wishes to see how much electricity they are using. Just email info@skdt.org or call 07852 956 645 to borrow one.
Another great way to save money and carbon is to insulate your home.
Right now you could insulate your loft for half the price it would normally cost you! This offer is available to everyone with less than 270mm of loft insulation. You could also have your cavity walls insulated for as little as £150. These offers are part of the UK governments plans to cut our carbon emissions. If that wasn't enough there is also the Energy Assistance Package. If you qualify for this package then
If you want to get your home insulated for less then give the energy saving trust a call (free from a landline):
