South Kintyre Development Trust

Kintyre

Who are we?

Following a community consultation exercise carried out by the Campbeltown Area Development Group, South Kintyre Development Trust (SKDT) was formed as a company limited by guarantee in the autumn of 2008 (Company Registration No. SC349971). It became a Registered Charity in Scotland in 2010 (No. SC042018).

SKDT became a member of the Community Powerdown consortium in late 2008. The Community Powerdown consortium is designed to empower remote and rural communities so that they can reduce their carbon footprint. Thanks to Community Powerdown and the Climate Challenge Fund, SKDT received funding to employ a full time project officer from April 2009 until March 2011.

Where are we?

Kintyre is a peninsula on the west coast of Scotland. Geographically, the peninsula is long and narrow, at no point more than 11 miles from west coast to east coast. The central spine of the peninsula is mostly hilly moorland. The coastal areas and hinterland, however, are rich and fertile. As such, Kintyre has long been a prized area for settlers, from the early Scots who migrated from Ulster to western Scotland and the Vikings or Norsemen who conquered and settled the area just before the start of the second millennium.

The principal town of the area is Campbeltown, which has been a royal burgh since the mid-18th century. The area's economy has long relied on fishing and farming, although Campbeltown has a reputation as a producer of some of the world's finest single malt whisky. More recently South Kintyre has been utilising its substantial renewable energy resources through the establishment of several large scale wind farms. The area is also home to a large wind turbine manufacturing plant.

What do we do?

As well as addressing environmental issues, SKDT's remit includes the advance of sustainable development and the regeneration of the local area.
